To complement our Italian Language Session, Winter 2025: "Gli strumenti musicali", we will continue to honor music by offering a special 4-week class focused on Italian music: PAROLE IN MUSICA.
By learning Italian through music, you’ll not only expand your vocabulary but also gain a richer appreciation of Italian culture and its unique expressions.
Each week, you'll explore a different genre, from classic opera to contemporary pop. You will learn new vocabulary and verbs, enhancing your linguistic skills while enjoying the rhythms (il ritmo) and melodies (le melodie) of renowned Italian artists and popular Italian songs. This class is ideal for students at all levels (not reccommended for Absolute Beginners) currently enrolled in our 9-week course and those new to our program, providing an opportunity to reinforce your learning in a fun and dynamic setting.

Join us onFriday, February 28as we explore this rich connection between film (cinema) and food (cibo) with our dear friend Marialucia Luongo. She will guide us through an engaging journey, revealing how legendary directors likeEttore Scola, Sergio Leone, Luchino Visconti, and Nanni Moretti have used meals to capture the essence of Italian culture, history, and identity. Through unforgettable scenes, we’ll see how a simple dish can tell a story of survival, celebration, or longing.
Along the way, you’ll expand your Italian vocabulary, immersing yourself in the language of food, film, and tradition. And to bring the magic of Italian cinema into your own kitchen, Marialucia will prepare delicious and easy-to-make recipes — featuring meat (carne), fish (pesce), and vegetables (verdure) — perfect for all tastes.
About Marialucia
Marialucia Luongo, born in Naples, is a distinguished journalist, educator, and author with a deep passion for Italian literature and culinary traditions. After earning her degree in Modern Literature, she became a journalist in 1980, contributing to major national newspapers such as Il Mattino and La Repubblica, as well as renowned lifestyle magazines Donna and Donna Moderna.
Beyond journalism, Marialucia has dedicated her career to teaching Italian language and literature, holding positions in Naples, Perugia, and at the Australian National University in Canberra. She has also taught in the United States at New York University and Queens College in New York.
Her love for Italian cuisine led her to write Cucinaria: Letters from the Kitchen, a book that has been translated into English and sold at New York’s iconic Kitchen Arts & Letters. In 2004, she published a collection of ancient Italian recipes while also leading seminars on the History of Italian Cuisine and conducting cooking classes both in Italy and internationally.
In 2018, she brought her expertise to Seattle, where she led cooking classes at percorsoItaliano, sharing the rich culinary traditions of Italy with enthusiastic audiences.
Recently one of her recipes has been published in"The International Table- Recipes from the Seattle Sister Cities".

In this 9-week advanced class, students will practice Italian through culture and history while reading short stories which take place in different periods of Italian history: Rinascimento, Risorgimento, the unification of Italy, World War I, Fascism, the Resistance movement, the 60’s, and the fight against the Mafia. Through a series of racconti brevi di fantasia and storytelling, students will practice conversation, learning new vocabulary, reviewing grammar structures while exploring Italian history. What a great way to also discover personaggi storici famosi della cultura italiana.

DESCRIPTION and GRAMMAR OBJECTIVES:
Immerse yourself in Italian as you and your classmates engage in free-flowing conversations about anything and everything. Each week as you bond over shared stories and events, you will seamlessly learn new verbs and verbal structures, review TEMPI e MODI of verbs, deepening your understanding of Italian grammar, vocabulary, and idioms. Traveling with Verbs will lead you on the path to fluency, helping you gain greater ease, confidence, and command of la bella lingua.

DESCRIPTION:
Practice your Italian through the creative language of literature. The approach to literature will stimulate students to understand the plot, to recognize the style and enhance creativeness in speaking and writing. The reading will be accompanied by interactive activities focused on comprehension, vocabulary, and conversation. After taking this course, students will feel encouraged to continue their own percorso in Italian literature.
